Currently, glass scales produced by photolithography are used as a pointer to the center. I know that this is a fairly simple and popular method for making such glass scales. But I also see it possible to use two polycarbonate cylinders with end grooves. When combining two cylinders with such grooves, you can easily notice how the picture changes dramatically (shimmers with rainbow circles). These property can be used as an indicator of the alignment of centers.
